Know More About Family Sponsorship
Canadian government always set families on top and give precedence to family reunification. If you want to sponsor a spouse, partner or child for permanent residence you must qualify below to be an eligible sponsor.
You must be:
- Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident if Canada.
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Must Live in Canada or if you are a citizen, then you must show that you plan to live in Canada when your sponsored relative becomes a Permanent Resident;
- Satisfy Quebec specific laws regarding sponsorship if you live in Quebec; and
- Be able to prove that you have enough income to provide basic needs of the person or people that you are sponsoring.
- Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
However, there are also some limitations which makes you in-eligible as a sponsor:
- If you were sponsored by a spouse or partner and you become permanent resident for less than 5 years ago. You cannot sponsor. This applies even if you got your Citizenship within those 5 years.
- If you were sponsored by a previous spouse or partner, and you are still financially responsible for a previous spouse or partner that you sponsored you will be bound by 3 years undertaking.
- If you defaulted your previous undertaking.
- If you are in process of bankruptcy and are not discharged.
- If you receive social assistance, exemption to a disability.
- If you were convicted of an offence such as sexual offences in or outside Canada or you were in jail, prison.
- If you are on a removal order.
- If you have already filed an application to sponsor spouse, parent or child you are currently seeking to sponsor and a decision on that application hasn’t been made.
- If you have not paid any loan from immigration, a performance bond, a court ordered family support payments such as any alimony or child support. However, this is not valid if you live in Quebec).
- If you did not provide a financial support, you agreed when you signed a sponsorship agreement to sponsor someone in the past.
- If a family member you sponsored in the past got social assistance or welfare while on valid undertaking, you being a sponsor cannot sponsor until you repay the full amount of the social assistance or welfare.
Sponsoring a Spouse
You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner who is at least 18 years old, or your dependent child and the relationship must be genuine.
To Sponsor a spouse there are two streams to file an application:
- Overseas/outside Sponsorship application – These are for the spouses or partner who are living outside Canada.
- In-land/Inside Sponsorship application – These are for a spouse or partner who is living in Canada. Under this category applicant may also be eligible to apply for a work permit when the sponsorship application is filed.

Sponsoring a Child
If you want to sponsor a Child, the child must be of the age of 22 years old and the child must be un-married. If the child is older than 22 years of age and is dependent on the parents either financially or/and physically because of mental and/or physical condition, then that child may also qualify to be sponsored despite being older than 22 years of age. Once the sponsorship application is in process with Immigration, a family member who is over the age of 18 years must provide police clearance certificate and all family members must need a medical exam.
Sponsoring a parents and grand-parents
This is one of the Canada’s most popular Immigration programs. The program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada.
This program is operated by the lottery system and limited number of application will be accepted every year depending upon the limit set by the Government.
Sponsors who are interested to apply for their parents and grand-parents will complete an online form and then the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) will randomly choose individuals from those who filled out the form, and those people will get invited to send in their full application to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Sponsors will have 90 days to submit their complication to the IRCC.
